Piperites besiege KETB!
by Don Miller, Secretary

On July 26th, expect 10-20 Piper aircraft, of various models to descend upon West Bend looking for food, drink, and fuel!!! This would be the group from First-of-Pryor, rallying for the fly-in at Oshkosh!

We (the Piperites) have an authorized caravan into AirVenture (20 Aircraft) on Sunday AM (27 July, about 10:00 AM). KETB has been selected as the rally point. Most will arrive Saturday and over-night, but a few will straggle in on Sunday AM.... Tie-down will be on the East Ramp.

This is an interesting group of people from around the globe (YES! It's international!!) Our farthest visitor will be from South Africa.. Let's make them feel welcome...

Chapter opportunities! Sell FOOD! I plan on cranking up the grill, and selling as many Brat's, Burgers, Chip's and Soda as possible. I am providing a bus to/from the Hotel. I am charging a $10.00 landing/tie-down fee to cover this cost. All proceeds go to the chapter.

Conflicts: These are the set-up day's for Aeromart. Help at Aeromart if you can, but if you can't? Help at home! Or split your efforts!
Don ... )8-> PS: These folks are also prepared to buy raffle tickets!!

Membership Report
by Russ Kaye, Membership Chairman

We welcome to the Chapter, Tim and Anne Tucker and their family. We currently have 80 members. Down from 85 last year but still not too bad. We have some elections coming up in November. President, Secretary and some board of director terms are up. If you have some extra time to devote you may want to think about running for those positions. If you are interested you can contact one of the members on the Nominating Committee, which will be announced soon.

For those members with computer access we have a number of recent additions to our web site. We now have a Guest Book for recording guests and reviewing their comments about the site and Chapter. We have a Chat Area where our members can gather online and have discussions. We have a Forum, another area for discussions that has started seeing some use already. And we have a photo Gallery, which already has quite a few pictures of the Chapter's activities. For questions or ideas regarding the Guest Book, Chat Area, or Forum contact Dan Staehler, 338-1351 or staehler@execpc.com. For the Gallery contact Dan or me, 284-3695 or rkaye@execpc.com.

With Airfest and Air Camp behind us, we still have two major events to focus on. Airventure and Aeromart are very soon to be upon us. If you have some time available I hope you will join in on the work, fun, and camaraderie that Aeromart has to offer. The other upcoming event that is most important to the Chapter is the Harley Raffle. As of this writing we have not yet reached the break-even point. The summer offers many events where we have the opportunity to sell raffle tickets. If you have time available to help out contact Don Miller, 306-1405 or n4550x@naspa.net or Jackie Barribeau, 376-0742 or garnjac@msn.com. Russ ----------

Air Camp 2003
By Paul Lupton

On June 24, 2003 fourteen youth "graduated" from the fourth Air Camp at EAA 1158. A few loose ends need to be tied up like sending out the group souvenir photo and getting all the bills paid, but Air Camp 2003 is history and the mailing list for Air Camp 2004 has already been started.

A few highlights: Each year changes evolve and things seem to go a bit smoother. But then again who could predict that Air Camp would be a witness to a major drug bust in progress! Kyle Howard again made an appearance with a helicopter that thrilled all the campers and several parents and chapter members. Gunter Voltz shared priceless anecdotes about Zeppelins from 1910 in Germany! Jeff Molner, FAA meteorologist from Green Bay AFSS brought his traveling weather show to Air Camp and displayed a few new gadgets. He now lugs around an inflated Model A tire to give kids a feel for the cooling effect of expanding air! This year his cloud in a bottle demonstration worked really well and is sure to leave some lasting impressions. Tom Callenberg was instrumental in having the MSOE monster R/C airplane available for the Air Camp kids and gave a detailed explanation and showed a video of the model on its winning flight. Herb Baker gave small group tours of his T-28. The chapter's newly constructed Wright flyer had a place of honor during our classroom sessions and provided a great visual boost to our historic discussions. A new feature was a segment on the techniques, advantages, and limitation of composite contruction. Members even got to conduct a hands-on hot wire cut of a wing section!

No Air Camp has been held without the willing help of dozens of volunteers. At the risk of omitting a name I will recite the work roster to give credit where due. Replacing Al Price, (visiting France) as relief director was Jim Retzlaff. Jim smoothly handled the job and pitched in for several projects. Allison Finco, assisted by her daughters and mom were fantastic cooks for our lunches. Dan Staehler was my "Man Friday" available to problem solve and pitch in at a moment's notice. Don Benvenuto, his wife Pat, and a crew of four ground handlers brought his colorful hot air balloon to ETB for a 7AM demonstration and tethered rides for campers and their families. The Sky Ranch Flyers consisted of Tom Blackstone, Al Broecker and Pete Ullrich provided stick and tissue models, construction assistance and flight-testing for all the kids. On Sunday an even larger group did hand-on flight demos at their R/C flying field. Bruce Post, Don Miller, and Jim Retzlaff conducted detailed preflights of Cessna 152s. Instructors Bob Mierniczak, John Morris, Chris Wright and myself from West Bend Air were the Discovery Flight pilots. Patiently supervising the construction of tissue hot air balloons were chapter member Sally Post and parents, Lynn Minsky, Kim Lukes and Mary Plavec. Herb Baker, Howard Kaney, Al Loescher, Jim Rodrian, Chris Good, Jim Fox and Jim Retzlaff did the honors in the Aircraft Circuit Training board project. Jackie Baribeau and Jim Retzlaff taught a session on the E6-B and navigation. Dave Paulus, Greg Allman, Herb Baker, Al Bruggink, Don Miller and Louis Scepanski kept eager fingers from mishaps on the time consuming Sonex aluminum wing project. Jim Rodrian did a super job in creating a power point presentation of electrical wiring and composite construction. Airplane owners and pilots Alison Finco, Mike Schrieber, Ken Seidel and Glen Brandt all showed up Tuesday morning for our Oshkosh cross-country but had to pass due to statewide thunderstorms. The staff at Basler Turbo Conversions and Chuck Larson and his staff at the EAA Air Academy were most accommodating. The closing cookout was organized by Allison Finco and Ron Champeny assisted by fourteen families who brought a dish to pass.

Special mention must be given to Craig Devenport of West Bend Air for his generous and consistent support of Air Camp. Again this year through his generosity several youth were able to attend Air Camp.

Lest this litany get too long let me conclude with recognition of all the parents whose interest and support was an inspiration to us all.

As I said in my closing remarks, Air Camp continues to play an extremely important role in passing the torch of the love and understanding of aviation to the next generation. The "a-ha's" of discovery and the enthusiasm for the projects have been my pay for the time and effort spent!

Special note: A new feature, courtesy of Russ Kaye is an Air Camp Gallery. Check it out on the website. You may add your comments to any picture. Check from time to time for new additions and/or captions. P.L.

On the Air
from IFR magazine

I heard this going into Los Angeles International on SoCal approach frequency:
Approach: "Airliner Four Fifty-Six, turn right heading 180 for spacing."
Airliner 456: "Right turn 180. Airliner Four Fifty-Six. What's up?"
Approach: " Well our computers have the ability to suggest a specific vector to help us get the required spacing. So, the computer says you gotta go south for a while."
Airliner 456: "Oh. Well, our computer says that direct to the airport for visual will work."
Approach: (Laughs) "Yeah, but my computer trumps your computer.
