Another thing the New Year brings is that annual request for your dues payment. Your Board of Directors has elected to maintain the same $40.00 dues as last year and this year makes it easier on us all by providing self addressed stamped envelopes for dues return. Though no official deadline has been set, your early attention would be most appreciated. Your input on the dues form questionnaire is important also as it helps give the Board direction and is a valuable tool for improving the Chapter.
Thanks to all and Happy New Year, Russ

Today we are visiting with Don Miller, EAA Chapter 1158 Secretary.
What attracts you to EAA?
"My enthusiasm for aviation. Not just flying, but the variations in aircraft design that have emerged over the last 400 (yes! 400 not 100 years). EAA pays respect to them all!"
The most enjoyable experience I had working with this chapter has been.....
"Tough question. They've all been enjoyable. Young Eagle flights are some of the most self satisfying, but it's a lot of fun to join in on the regular meetings, as well as the special events. I think the highlight for me, so far, has been my assignment as ground liaison for the Spirit of St. Louis. Being responsible for such a valuable replica is quite an inspiration."
The funniest aviation story I can recall is......
"One of my friends first landings. Like many aviation enthusiasts, I keep a scanner running on common CTAF's. My friend and I attended ground school together, but I progressed quicker through the flight training and thus, got my ticket sooner. So it goes.
Anyway here I am in my kitchen, listening to traffic on 122.7, 122.8, and 123.0. Yeah I know, I need a life. This voice breaks in on 122.8 … "Oh my God, AirplaneXXX turning final! Oh! Oh!
After landing I chastised my friend for laughing on final. Totally unprofessional. My friend should be getting their private rating real soon!"
What do you look forward to accomplishing in our local chapter?
"Our Chapter needs a direction, an inspiration, and continued growth in membership. My talents are in administration and data processing. I hope to find a way to evoke the creativity of the membership into projects and goals that I can aid by administering the plans, cost/revenues, and data administration. My overall aim is Chapter growth."
What is your favorite aircraft and why?
"I would have to say, it is the XB-70 Valkyrie. Why? I had a very close uncle whose company developed the engines for the project. There was an awful lot of new technology that went into that project, and much of it is still being used in both conventional and space based aircraft. I remember a time, when I was perhaps 10 years old, I was hand building a rocket based model of the XB-70… My uncle was advising me on thrust angles… Something I had no concept of, and didn't consider again until advised of the veritable "P" angle.
But I still enjoy flying my Piper Cherokee 140! Even at Mach 0.15 it gets you there!"
The morning began (for me) about 07:20. I pulled up to the chapter
hangar, and Paul Kyle was looking for a ride. No problem, I now have a
right seat, and hangar hand! A quick trip to the FBO, get legal on the
weather, and then off to the hangar to get my bird ready to fly.
In-hangar walk around, pull her out, full pre-flight, and cockpit
rigging. We're ready to go! But where are we going? Possible
destinations were Lone Rock, Janeseville, Reedsburg, and Bimini
(Bahamas). Bimini would have been tough on my dogs... as they were stuck
at home.
With a rolling query out the cockpit door (Paul needed a little coaching
on this) Chris advised us to proceed direct Lone Rock (KLNR). I set the
GPS 150 for KLNR, GPSCOM 190 to the same. Set the VOR for a 278 bearing
(outbound). We taxied to 31. Run-up just short of the first hold line.
Everything's OK. Take off checklist complete. Everybody's strapped in,
we're ready to fly! Take the runway, and we're the first off into a
beautiful November morning sky.
About now my intercom is getting weak. I had anticipated this since my
last flight had Glen Brandt in the right seat, and Glen, well, talks
alot. This activity drains alot of batteries, but especially the one in
the intercom. So I stabilize the aircraft at 4500' (Westbound VFR
course), ask Paul to hand me the spare battery in the right map pocket,
and hand over the airplane to him while I change batteries. As it turns
out I don't touch the controls again until we are within sight of the
airport (KLNR).
Along the way we discuss some, en-rought procedures, pilotage, and
basic VFR navigation. Paul manipulates the VOR, and monitors the two GPS
systems to avoid KMSN Class C. These are systems he is unfamiliar with,
but does well. About 10 out I have the airport in sight, take over the
controls, and begin our descent for a left UP-wind to 27. At about 3500'
some Mooney passes 300' below us, and we both give a one-finger salute
to Ken Seidel, as he speeds straight-in for 27! Early seating does not
guarantee good service at Lone Rock!
Grease landing. Park. A wonderful breakfast, during which Paul get's
grilled for his upcoming PP written.
Brief pre-flight, Taxi to 09. Paul catches me as I miss the hold-short
line. Kudos! Off, straight out. My headset cuts out, and I start putzing
with it. Wrong time. I got us up to a comefortable cruise climb, and then
addressed the problem. I'm on my way to 5500' (eastbound). Glen (who
departed behind me) passes us thru 4800'. We passed the clouds at about
3500', into clear smooth air. A wonderful return flight, I flew most of
the way. At one point, there was some altimiter confusion between
aircraft ahead of us. So I asked Paul for the ATIS frequency for KMSN
(Madison). It was swiftly and correctly delivered.
Upon arrival at West Bend the AWOS is reporting 360 at 10 Knots. So I
begin to set up for 31. Traffic in the pattern is using 06... HMM. I
hear Jim Dricken land on 06 and recommend 31 due to crosswinds. I
continue my approach for 31. Over the field, I looked at the sock and it
was straight down 06. Not a problem. I changed, and announced, my
downwind to a "circle to land" to 06. By the time I got to final for 06
the wind was straight down 31. Poop occurs. Not a greaser. But we landed
safely. Taxied to the pumps. I filled my tanks, and Paul emptied his
shorts.. so it goes!
In all seriousness, this is something we do every VFR weekend. It can be
both fun and educational! It's a fun and inexpesive way to get involved
in the Chapter! Join us!! And Paul, I'll mentor you anytime!
Join us! It's your chapter! Get involved!
Let's go to 62C!
Although I have some 400 hours in single engine land (SEL) I am 99.97%
pure on asphalt or concrete. Plenty of grass in gliders, both on and off
field.
In October G (anonymous B) asked me to pick him up at Guntley Memorial
(2400' Grass), after he dropped off his Bonanza for it's annual. No
problem. At his suggested departure time the winds were 10, forecast
gusting to 20 across everything. I suggested we delay departure until 3PM
balancing daylight and forecast diminishing winds.
A nice flight from KETB to 62C. I elected to communicate with Milwaukee
(KMKE) approach. Visibility was 'marginal' into the sun, but I had
Muskego lake 20 miles out. Requested lower (from 4500') and got it.
Airport in sight, terminate flight following and circle down into the
pattern. Standard "Cessna" landing. Abeam the numbers 1500 RPM, two
thrusts back on the trim, one notch flaps. Stabilize at 90 MPH
Indicated. Turn base, OKay we're high, another notch of flaps.Scan right
for traffic, turn final, land. Keep the nose up. A greaser? Unless you
plant the gear into the ground, it's hard to do anything but...
So G (Anonymous B) spends a half hour introducing me to the
personalities on the airfield.
We climb into my Cherokee. The lesson is about to begin. Fire up, defer
run-ups, since she'd just been run. There was an Ultra-Light flying the
pattern, so we sat and idled while he went around twice. Flipping
gnats, I say..
Now, it's finnaly our turn. We turn, back taxi. On the back-taxi I
complete the Soft-field take off list. Flaps 20, Mixture full rich,
Transponder ALT, use all the runway.... FULL power before turning onto
the runway!
We were there. VROOM! Sputtering down the runway. 1000' 40 mph. So it
goes. We're dead. 1500' 60 MPH "Just get this sucker in the air". Fly in
ground effect enougn to clear the trees. Done. We are airborne and on
our way home.
All the way home, all I hear are complaints of how slow my airpane is...
So it goes.
Bottom line: This was a dry grass field. It surprised me how much drag
was induced by the surface. In retrospect I think I would have
accelerated with 0 flaps, and then added them at 60 MPH and snapped her
off, but this is a Piper strategy...

On 17 November 2002, the "West Bend Air Force" assaulted Lone Rock
airport, en-force. The combined air assault group consisted of PA28-140
low level support fighters, Beechcraft HEAVY bombers, an RV-6
interceptor, a C-182 "Air Boss", and a Mooney flying tail.
